Umbria is a mountainous region with wooded hills, meandering rivers and mountain lakes. This area is sometimes called the green heart of Italy. It is less well known than the neighbour Tuscany, but in terms of beauty and ruggedness Umbria does certainly not under. You walk in the footsteps of 3 major saints: Francis of Assisi, Benedict and Ubaldus

For hikers, Umbria certainly is a challenge, because the routes are hardly off or signposted and good hiking maps are also lacking. Yet it is hiking. You walk between sunflower fields, olive groves, beech and oak forest, along mountain streams, meadows and paths flowering broom. On the slopes of Monte Subasio, Monte Cucco and Monte Sibilini you enjoy the silence and the beautiful views.

Along everywhere witnesses of a rich past; often lonely on top century-old houses, deserted hamlets and fortified farms. You have the richness for yourself, because peace and tranquility reigns in Umbria. Who likes to see the landscape in this way, you will enjoy double. Do not forget to bring your camera!

Tips if you want to hike in Umbria

Pull high boots and the paths are often uneven and slippery after rain, good support is than welcome. Take plenty of water and something to eat with you, you can not buy something everywhere you go. Avoid walking in the heat of the day, take your sun cream, sunglasses, hat, and especially don't forget your phone. Be sure you have a good map with you, because you will need it if you cannot find the markers. Or even better take your GPS with you.

The hills of Umbria are not high, however, the walks are not usually flat. The routes are on good walkable paths on the hillsides. The length ranges from 2 to 6 & frac12; hour walk and height exceed 1000 meters.

The best hiking time

The best months for hiking, are April, May and early June, then it is for most people soon too hot; from September to late November it still good hiking weather.
