Feel at home in Umbria

Assisi

Assisi is a famous pilgrimage site in Umbria with about 25,000 inhabitants.
It is the birthplace of two 13th-century saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. It is an impressive town but also just nice to see, even if you're not a believer.
Assisi with its narrow streets and picturesque shops has managed to preserve a medieval atmosphere.

Basilica di Santa Chiara in Assisi

Assisi has a beautiful silhouette, dominated by the Basilica of St. Francis and the castle, the Rocca Maggiore, on the hilltop, at the foot of the green, 1290 meters high Monte Subasio.
When the sun goes down, the medieval center turns into a warm pink glow.

Churches

Assisi

  • Basilica di San Francesco. This church was built in the 13th century on the tomb of St. Francis. It consists of a crypt beneath, a church and an upper church. The church is beautifully decorated with works by Cimabue and Giotto.
  • Basilica di Santa Chiara. The church is built on the model of the upper church of St. Francis, but with pink and white stripes. very special are the three huge buttresses on the street side.
  • Duomo di San Rufino. The cathedral was built in Romanesque style (recognizable by the many arches). Next to the church is a small museum with frescoes and paintings from various churches of Assisi; also the crypt with archaeological finds is worthwhile.
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore
  • Chiesa di San Pietro
  • Chiesa Nuova, built in the 17th century on the birthplace of St. Francis.
  • Oratorio dei Pellegrini, once part of a hospice for pilgrims
  • Oratorio di San Francesco Piccolino
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, in the market square of the church behind the temple front of Minerva

  • Convent of San Damiano, just outside the city wall. Here Francisus would have heard the voice of God with the message & quot; restore my church & quot;.
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria in Rivotorto, a neo-Gothic church built plated 19th century about a stable where once Francicus with some of his followers lived while she worked the surrounding fields.

Assisi

Other buildings

  • Roman Amphitheatre
  • Rocca Maggiore, one of the most beautiful views of the city.
  • The main square of Assisi, the Piazza del Comune, is dominated by the columns of the Roman Temple of Minerva, which has been preserved, there is now behind a church. The people's power in the thirteenth century, as in many Umbrian towns, drove the ecclesiastical and secular rulers, is identified in the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, equipped with a massive tower. Down the Wall of the tower you can find several sizes for bricks, tiles and materials. In the fourteenth century Palazzo dei Priori built on the other side of the square, the town hall, which is still in use.
